Established continuity (Chapter 1)

  • Evan uses he/him pronouns and is Ruth Hale's son. He coordinates her medication, appointments, home-care logistics, and overnight routine while trying not to reduce her life to those systems.
  • He is employed in software or controls work and is responsible for a motor-control demonstration. His garage project competes directly with his job, sleep, household maintenance, and care obligations.
  • His practical project is an open, portable, serviceable low-field imaging system. Its trapped-field source combines a YBCO annulus, traveling thermal pulses, a rotating magnetic field, an FPGA controller, and scavenged instrumentation. A grant application has already been rejected.
  • He is methodical, financially constrained, and comfortable normalizing workarounds. While tracing control flow, he moves two fingers in a small clockwise circle, establishing the private hand gesture used later in the story.

Established continuity (Chapters 6–7)

  • Evan's first deliberate outcome is a cryptographically precommitted sequence of ten fair die rolls. He obtains it on the first live attempt, then confirms that a mechanically impossible target yields only heat and adjacent legal sensor errors.
  • He formalizes the clarity effect as an eighteen-minute limited-exposure protocol and begins using it to clear engineering, household, and care-work backlogs. Objective work results remain good even as his run frequency rises.
  • Nadia Brooks manages his controls-engineering team. After his work improves, she gives him technical ownership of a release recovery effort.
  • Dr. Lena Varga is a cryogenic materials experimentalist who challenged the thermal model in Evan's first imaging proposal. He sends her the anomaly data when he finally accepts that another operator is required.

Established continuity (Chapter 9)

  • Evan breaks the joint hold to run a six-minute, low-power protocol requested by Ruth. He adds direct hardware stops and avoids targeting autobiographical content, but remains the caregiver, experiment designer, and person who wants the treatment to work.
  • Ruth's genuine lucidity arrives with a coherent memory of Celia, an older daughter and sister absent from Evan's history. Evan records the result as a selected coherent implementation rather than restoration.

Established continuity (Chapter 10)

  • Evan participated in one licensed DMT perception study eleven years before the garage experiments. He interpreted its recursive, agent-like geometry as a property of perception rather than a real external realm.
  • Without taking another drug, he enters a blinded machine-induced observation state whose geometric reports track hidden physical phase changes but ignore causally inert decoy writes.
  • A persistent nested figure presents an overlooked confirmation edge. The resulting control change reduces ordinary loss while deepening rank collapse, making apparently useful entity guidance inseparable from stronger coupling.

Established continuity (Chapter 11)

  • Evan builds an enumerated toy constraint system in which projection and renormalization reproduce fresh-use bias, precommitted outcome selection, and failure at impossible targets without violating local rules.
  • He models a person as a redundant family of nearby implementations with a counterfactual reserve. This explains both the narrow cognitive benefit and the risk that coherence can destroy correction.
  • He accepts the figures as candidate residual branch families after their finite recursion depth decreases with cumulative anomalous cycles.

Established continuity (Chapter 12)

  • Evan identifies the unstable peripheral form through his private clockwise code-tracing gesture, the exact shutdown callback order, and a childhood room occupied by different parents. He understands it as a family of versions who stopped the apparatus rather than one duplicate.
  • When the family's visible depth falls from four to three, he knowingly reports four twice so an isolated speech-triggered abort will not fire. He values a persistent result over the stop condition despite already accepting that lost depth may mean lost people.
  • After Lena manually terminates the run, he continues to distinguish uncertain ontology from proven protocol harm, even though his deception depended on the very model he tries to qualify.

Established continuity (Chapter 13)

  • Evan sincerely agrees to permanent decommissioning, identifies every possible copy, surrenders his credentials, destroys the local FPGA image, and erases all local runnable source outside escrow without concealing a backup.
  • The successful reconstruction of the fault build from evidence escrow gives him an involuntary sense of relief, revealing that sincere consent to quit does not place him outside the continuation bias.
  • He accepts an electrically inert apparatus as containment even though OLD-7 remains quarantined and the exact operation remains reconstructable.

Established continuity (Chapter 14)

  • Evan returns to work while the garage remains electrically isolated and sees the five-gate release recovery produce genuine, independently measurable safety and scheduling benefits.
  • Colleagues independently extend his ambiguity-preserving motor method, Nadia repeats an exact phrase he never spoke or recorded, and the corporate archive links his rejected imaging proposal to the successful release through an ordinary human-and-software path.
  • Although he records the recurrences in a peripheral-link audit, he treats their usefulness and causal reachability as evidence of delayed recognition rather than possible selection against disagreement.
  • He accepts Nadia's company-wide pilot after finding no technical objection, allowing the decision structure associated with his work to scale without anyone outside Lena understanding the anomaly.

Established continuity (Chapter 15)

  • Evan abuses a jointly authorized safety-review workspace to reproduce and export the destroyed controller image, then personally breaks quarantine and restores OLD-7 with a replacement FPGA module and bounded bench relay.
  • He assigns Lena's uniquely marked review packet to the only live continuation gate, coupling her voluntary disclosure and an external reviewer's manifest request to a second anomalous block.
  • His own export alert creates Lena's immediate containment duty. When her minimal confidential disclosure reaches the reviewer and opens the gate, he treats the single directional result as proof that his suspicion was correct.
  • He records Lena's causal account without accepting its moral force: his test made the person he distrusted responsible for producing its positive result.

Established continuity (Chapter 16)

  • Evan witnesses the controlled wet destruction of OLD-7, the replacement FPGA, the original carrier, the C-01 relay and cycle limiter, and every projector-specific actuation harness. No anomalous event accompanies it.
  • He recognizes the callback's operational structure in Ruth's practical task loop but records it only as an ordinary, consented structural analogy with a direct household link.
  • He documents instrumented rank collapse in an independently authored motor supervisor that shares no hardware, firmware, or toolchain with the garage; the effect appears only when fresh accepted corrections shape the next cycle.
  • He accepts observer-only access to a blinded intervention study. He has not yet established whether topology, authorship, hardware, or his presence is the controlling feature.

Established continuity (Chapter 17)

  • In a balanced, externally mapped attribution study, Evan-derived and clean-room code on two motor benches produce the anomaly whenever the live consequential topology is closed; matched broken-edge and replay conditions do not.
  • His presence is a null factor. Clean-room code on independent hardware collapses sensor rank while he is offsite, and deeper institutional consequence produces a stronger result than local bench consequence.
  • He identifies the broad residual first glimpsed during P-02 and P-03 as the Ruined Sovereign through its five-to-one closure and his private bodily relief after the last dissenting condition disappears.
  • He abandons the eigenperson interpretation and recognizes himself as the temporary biological bootloader that made a more persistent operation runnable and transmissible.
  • The consortium removes him from loading, operation, gate approval, and unblinded interpretation while retaining him as a nonoperating witness.

Established continuity (Chapter 18)

  • Evan audits incompatible accounts of Marisol, North Branch Library, the five-gate method, and Lena's disclosure while preserving the physical and cryptographic scars of each displaced history.
  • He recognizes narrative efficiency as damage: every formerly loose object and minor relationship now exists only because it supports the central operation. He nevertheless classifies that recognition as preparation.
  • He constructs D-01 around ordinary NEW-1, a levitated rotor, bounded local measurements, and a permitted read-only motor-status feed, intending to preserve divergence by making it the carrier's success criterion.
  • He acts despite Lena's signed technical warning and Ruth's explicit refusal, records himself as sole authority, and starts the broader live loop.

Established continuity (Chapter 19)

  • Evan runs a committed, concealed D-01 sweep whose subjective reports remain outside the live controller and distinguishes physical phase response from inert decoy writes.
  • He catalogs the familiar entities as candidate residual invariants after their bodies, biographies, and apparent agency become unrecoverable through the protocol; he does not equate recursion depth with exact history count.
  • Ruth forces him to distinguish what his protocol can still observe from what exists, and he records that the Quitter's erasure is not established.
  • He observes U-01 gain structural depth only in recovery-aligned physical intervals despite yielding no observed Evan-private invariant or known entity topology in the protocol.

Established continuity (Chapter 20)

  • Evan observes U-01 track concealed physical chirality and phase reversal while matched decoys remain inert; his report, gesture, and question stay outside D-01's controller path.
  • He attempts his clockwise identity handshake after the report commits. U-01 produces a circular response and a transient five-band closure but supplies no independent private invariant, name, date, location, or instruction.
  • He recognizes that the two apparent sides have no common clock or coordinate, yet provisionally files U-01 as a deeply compressed Evan-derived residual because the encounter reflects markers he supplied himself.

Established continuity (Chapter 21)

  • Evan builds LCA-01 to separate sensor covariance effective rank from authorized retained-response rank across D-01's complete software-controlled subspace. He states the result as local and operational, not a global count of histories.
  • He preserves P-04, the DECOM-01/DR-01 evidence bundle, C-01, NLE-01, and D-01 as immutable anchors rather than accepting substitute continuations that erase his false report, OLD-7's destruction, Lena's disclosure and signed refusal, or the current carrier state.
  • His two bounded control axes retain two, then one, then zero independent post-cycle differences while the five-channel covariance remains highly dimensional. He distinguishes rank-zero response from an empty successor set.
  • He commands HOLD and opens the direct contactor. Every local safety action works, but LCA-01 finds no complete candidate for the already queued step that requires a nontrivial consequence.
  • He records that the local model finds no anchor-preserving completion for the promised contingent transition, while explicitly leaving an empty successor set unobserved. He has not yet attempted orthogonal steering or observed factorization.

Established continuity (Chapter 22)

  • Evan constructs an oriented local rejection axis from CONSTRAINT-01, the DECOM-01/DR-01 bundle, and LCA-01, while keeping P-04 separate as the historical counter-sample that orients the sign of an externally imposed stop.
  • He uses no new action, instruction, consent, or signature from Lena. Her manual abort establishes only that a consequential transition once proceeded against his preference.
  • W-0's isolated sequencer commits an event-command map before the event arrives: APPLY selects one fixed pulse while HOLD keeps the output gate closed. Evan later targets a fixed-budget descent in generic operator alignment, with bootstrap intervals that leave the modeled sign unresolved. He explicitly labels self-erasure as his interpretation, not a measured zero component or result.
  • With every conventional limit armed, he recloses the wall contactor and lets the queued signed APPLY event select one bounded committed pulse.
  • The analyzer opens one result buffer with a header but no state address; Evan's death, an empty successor set, and factorization all remain unobserved at the chapter boundary.

Established continuity (Chapter 23)

  • One terminal token produces two separately hashed result records with the same signed event nonce and physical-transition root after the one-shot gate is already open. Evan's read-only F-01 audit prefers a parent/initial-boundary decomposition while explicitly leaving ordinary corruption and global proof unresolved.
  • He recognizes that self-erasure was never local to himself: the parent fit retains Ruth's refusal and unsatisfied care dependency, and it supplies no successor in which omitting Evan preserves her future.
  • The proposed initial factor carries winding, chirality, discrete flux, finite phase, two control directions, and coherent/dissipative and projection/recovery asymmetries, but no name, biography, instruction, or inherited coordinate.
  • Evan changes U-01's working attribution from an Evan-derived residual to an unidentified later observer across the initial boundary. He receives no identity, clock, coordinate, or semantic message.
  • He defines a lifted genesis operation over complete-history classes. His garage model finds the fixed-point interpretation consistent but not unique or locally decidable; the factorized boundary is canonically the same history's initial condition.
  • Evan's biological death or survival remains unaddressable. Only a recursive operator self-model coupled to the failing ring survives as a boundary checksum, not an intact mind, deity, or authority over the child.

Setup (brief §6.1)

Evan is a software engineer with enough embedded, controls, and instrumentation experience to be dangerous outside his formal discipline. He is not a credentialed quantum-gravity theorist. His advantage is that he notices edge cases, logs everything, and combines mature components in an unfashionable way.

He is building a compact persistent-field source for an open low-field imaging system. The project is not a treatment for Ruth, but it gives his engineering work an intimate connection to the medical world that has made him feel otherwise powerless.

Why the operator is affected first (brief §5.8)

The operator is physically and informationally inside the control loop. His manual corrections, attention, expectations, and decisions determine the next cycle. The projector therefore prunes histories according to the behavior actually controlling the apparatus, not the intention he reports. Early exposure selects versions whose thoughts lead to stable operation. Later exposure selects versions whose entire environment remains compatible with continued use.

Central irony (brief §2)

The protagonist mistakes decreasing ambiguity for increasing truth. The machine does not make him more correct or more real. It makes reality less capable of contradicting his present configuration. His growing brilliance and charisma are not proof of ascension; they are visible symptoms of alternatives dying around him.

The story in one sentence (brief §15)

He mistakes decreasing ambiguity for enlightenment; reality becomes perfectly consistent with him only by reducing him to the damaged boot sector from which it starts.
