The destruction team arrived at 7:20 with a chain-of-custody printer and a sealed hazardous-material transport vehicle.
They did not enter the garage until Evan had opened the mains disconnect, shown zero on every bus, and surrendered the reproduced FPGA module. A technician photographed the cut DECOM-01 tape, the temporary seal Evan had applied after C-01, and Lena's numbered lock with its shackle severed. The record did not describe those things as ambiguous.
OLD-7, the replacement module, the empty original controller carrier, the bench relay, the independent cycle limiter, and every projector-specific heater and stator lead went into separate evidence containers. The team inspected NEW-1 and left it in the component bin. Its certification still matched its behavior. It had never produced the anomaly and had not been connected during C-01.
Evan followed the vehicle to the licensed materials facility. Lena joined through the consortium's evidence channel. Her camera remained off. Her signature appeared whenever the custody record advanced.
The intake magnetometer found no trapped field above its noise floor. The mass of the sealed OLD-7 package matched Evan's post-run photograph within the scale tolerance. A swab found barium and silver at the damaged tape fold but none outside the inner bag. The ordinary controls passed before anyone touched the ceramic.
Inside the wet enclosure, the technician opened the bags and removed the annulus. Water made the glossy face look whole again. The pale defect line crossed the lower surface, ending in the silver epoxy Evan had once used to normalize the part into service.
The first diamond cut passed radially through the coherent upper region, the porous lower region, and the bonded boundary between them. The second cut divided the largest remaining arc. The technician continued until no fragment contained enough circumference to support a closed superconducting path and no closed path remained along the coherent-lossy interface.
Ceramic slurry stayed under water. A filtered recirculation loop captured the solids. The operator sealed the fragments and filter media as hazardous waste, then rinsed the enclosure into the same controlled stream.
Nothing anomalous occurred. The saw current rose when it entered the dense upper face. The water warmed. The fragments settled according to their weight.
At the electronics station, a shear broke the replacement FPGA package through its die and cut the carrier into strips. The original carrier, empty flash footprint, bench relay, cycle limiter, oscillator, heater sequencer, and stator harness followed. The technician scanned each storage component for readable configuration data before destruction and found only the C-01 image already recorded in evidence.
The retention-locked escrow remained. Its routine access session was closed, its bytes were unchanged, and its policy still prevented deletion. Hardware destruction did not solve the information problem. It only completed the part of DECOM-01 that safe handling had postponed.

Evan signed the final line. Lena countersigned from wherever she was. The technician removed the original aluminum case from the empty evidence table and asked whether Evan wanted it returned.
He said no.
At home, the garage contained a blank space beneath the open disconnect. The frost marks had dried from the chamber jacket. The rack rails ended around an absence with the specificity of a removed appliance.
Ruth was at the kitchen table arranging five index cards around the cordless phone.
The cards read CHECK, ASK, WAIT, DO, and MARK. A wooden clothespin rested on CHECK. Beside ASK she had put the agency number. WAIT held the blue cup she used for tea. Her library bag sat beside DO. MARK held the paper calendar and a pen.
"What is this?" Evan asked.
"A way to finish one telephone call."
The home-care schedule had changed again. Ruth needed to confirm who would take her to the library, wait for the agency to call back, pack what she needed, and mark the new time. Twice that morning she had mistaken waiting for forgetting and begun the call from the start.
"Why a circle?"
"Because after MARK I need to check whether I am finished."
"WAIT is not an action."
Ruth moved the clothespin to WAIT. "Then it is the action I lose most often. If I don't give waiting a place, I call again or put on my coat before anyone answers."
She had used a similar rotation when students checked one another's proofs: read the claim, ask the question, allow an answer, make the correction, record the result. A telephone call required fewer symbols and more patience.
Evan took out his phone.
"No," Ruth said.
"I only want a picture."
"I am using it. You can document it after it has helped me."
The phone rang. Ruth answered, listened, moved the clothespin from WAIT to DO, and placed a library book in the bag. She wrote Thursday, three o'clock on the calendar, moved the clip to MARK, then returned it to CHECK and read the appointment aloud.
Only then did she let Evan photograph the cards.
"Include the cup," she said. "Otherwise you will think the empty part does nothing."
The arrangement resembled the controller callback because both systems had to preserve state across a delay. It did not share code, hardware, field geometry, or purpose with OLD-7. It shared a household with Evan, a vocabulary he might have used, and a person who had spent years solving interruptions without becoming anyone's instrument.
Evan filed the photograph as structural analogy, not evidence.
Nadia called before he closed the file.
"I need you to look at a test result," she said. "Not approve anything. Look."
Lin had been validating a new safety supervisor around the dual-hypothesis motor estimator. Marcus wrote the retained-state service. Lin wrote the fixture interface. A program team Evan had never joined supplied the five-gate acceptance logic. The code contained no line from his garage controller, no copied binary, and no dependency from the escrowed toolchain.
The estimator still did what Evan had designed it to do. Near zero speed, it carried both valid angle solutions until measurable back electromotive force distinguished them. The new supervisor surrounded that uncertainty with a slower cycle. It read the retained safety state, requested a proposed correction, waited through winding and inverter thermal lag, applied or held the correction using live fixture data, recorded the result, and allowed the accepted state to shape the next reversal.
No component tried to make one hypothesis true. The surrounding operation still closed accepted decisions into their own next conditions.
Lin's fixture treated its instrumentation as independent fault coverage. DC-link current, housing vibration, winding temperature, angle residual, and the fixture oscillator had separate sensors and clock sources. During recorded replay, their effective rank remained between 4.41 and 4.83.
During live accepted corrections, the rank fell below 1.3.
The decline began only after a proposed correction could affect APPLY or HOLD and that result could change the next reversal. Shadow proposals remained ordinary. Yoked replay reproduced the commands, current, heat, and motion without reproducing the covariance collapse.
"How many live blocks?" Evan asked.
"Six. We stopped after Lin showed me the channel matrix."
"Did the torque spike recur?"
"No. Neither did the false fixture pass or the brownout state loss."
Nadia had isolated the bench, blocked the supervisor from customer deployment, and preserved the hardware trips. She would not restore the unsafe release merely because its replacement had produced a result she did not understand.
"Tell me what you need to distinguish," she said. "I am not giving you the controls."
Evan requested the source hashes, build manifests, board bills of material, test topology, and raw sensor streams. Nadia sent them through the restricted company review and authorized a redacted comparison for the neutral safety channel.
The comparison took forty minutes.

Her annotations arrived beside the rows without a greeting.
Ruth's arrangement was not experimental evidence. Known causal contact existed in all three cases. No common parts excluded copied implementation, not social transmission, shared requirements, or selection along prior links. The motor result established a new carrier only if its active topology, rather than its authors, hardware, or command sequence, predicted the effect under blinded intervention.
Lena proposed two paired tests. Break the live acceptance edge while retaining the authors and physical trajectory. Retain the edge in an independently packaged build while removing Evan from operation and analysis. She required the mapping to remain sealed until every result was committed.
Nadia accepted the protocol. She kept the bench isolated and assigned the package mapping to the external reviewer. Evan received observer-only access.
On his screen, the last live motor block had ended at a safety hold.
