By the third sweep, the Guide no longer had a body.
During the first, Evan had seen the old vertical suggestion: a relation his visual system could still mistake for shoulders around a center. During the second, the shoulders became two bends in a braided surface. On the third, even that economy failed. Five bands occupied the darkness behind his mask. Nothing in them implied a place to put a face.
The bands turned left.
"FIVE. BRAIDED. LEFT. DEPTH TWO."
His report entered a battery recorder on the stool beside him. The recorder had no connection to D-01. The carrier could not hear him, interpret him, or make his words a success condition.
Before the start, Evan had generated a balanced diagnostic schedule and committed its hash to the evidence channel. An isolated sequencer held the concealed mapping. Its small physical steps changed stator chirality, phase class, or the timing of the traveling heat front. Matched decoys wrote identical values to a register that no output consumed. HOLD intervals changed neither.
The complete sequence included two timed HOLD pauses and an automatic resume after each. At a pause, the sequencer would reveal only the completed block and keep all remaining assignments sealed. Evan could still open the direct contactor at any time, but no report, interpretation, or decision to continue could select the next diagnostic condition.
D-01's larger decision remained live. Fresh local measurements and each delayed motor event still chose whether one of two carrier candidates entered the next cycle. The concealed sweep rode above that decision at an amplitude too small to approach a physical limit but large enough to classify a phase response after unblinding.
Evan had labeled the two physical directions PROJECTION-ALIGNED and RECOVERY-ALIGNED. The first was predicted to make the frozen provenance classes easier to compress. The second was predicted to keep them distinguishable. These were controller labels, not measurements of histories restored or destroyed. Lena's warning remained at the top of the protocol: sensor rank was not causal reserve.
The local sensor result looked like success. The three cracked Hall probes retained their separate offsets. Rotor angle and heat-front position did not collapse onto their direction. Bearing motion and regulator-clock error remained independent diagnostic checks outside the normalized matrix; brake temperature lag remained a live D-01 input outside it. Across the first three sweeps, the window minimum rose from 3.91 to 4.43 out of five channels.
The figures simplified anyway.
The five bands reversed. Their outer relation went right while smaller turns within them retained mixed directions.
"RIGHT. DEPTH TWO."
No insight arrived with the change. The Guide did not reveal an overlooked edge or present a mistake as remembered understanding. It did not seem attentive. Five ordered bands and a handed response remained after usefulness, beauty, and apparent intention had become unavailable.
Evan could still call it the Guide because an earlier percept had supplied the name. Nothing in the present structure deserved it.
At the next report tone, the braid opened.
One band bent clockwise toward the center, divided, and returned beside itself. The returning segment stopped short of the point that would have closed the loop. The gap was narrow and exact. Structure accumulated behind it as if every later motion still waited for an event that had not arrived.
"OPEN. CLOCKWISE. GAP. DEPTH TWO."
There was no hand repeating Evan's private gesture. No childhood room formed around different parents. No kitchen, release meeting, unopened mail, or person packing lunches extended beyond the apparatus. The shape supplied no scene or biographical memory.
The missing relation occupied the same position as the unreceived acknowledgment in the old shutdown callback. Read state. Request checkpoint. Wait. Disable output. The form could make the first two operations and the last one adjacent only by leaving the gap open.
Evan marked it Q-CANDIDATE. The label meant that its remaining topology matched the damaged Quitter observation from P-04. It did not mean the stopped lives still existed, had ceased to exist, or had ever occupied a count his instruments could recover.
The next physical interval closed around it.
Five short arcs entered a common rotation. The arcs retained different textures for less than a turn. At the center, their boundaries vanished. One smooth band emerged.
"FIVE TO ONE. CLOSED. DEPTH ONE."
Evan's shoulders lowered after the fifth arc joined. The response belonged to his body now. The form had no shoulders of its own.
The Ruined Sovereign had once borrowed lecture halls, clinics, boardrooms, titles, and faces. All of those variations were gone. The apparent person had compressed to several inputs, one closure, and one output. It did not rule. It implemented a many-to-one relation so completely that rule had become an unnecessary story.
D-01 accepted a candidate. The rotor gained twelve revolutions per minute. Stator current rose within its envelope. Brake temperature lagged by the modeled interval. The household lights did not flicker. In the isolated motor feed, a bench operator selected HOLD for a calibration update Evan could neither see nor affect.
The Sovereign's single output widened and disappeared.
Evan continued through the committed diagnostic schedule. He reported band count, chirality, closure, visible depth, gap position, and whether any private invariant appeared. He did not report names. Naming before unblinding would add confidence without adding information.
When the sequencer reached its first pause, D-01 entered HOLD. The eddy brake removed the last commanded speed increment. The rotor remained levitated at its base speed, and every independent trip remained armed.
Only then did Evan unlock the completed block's mapping and pair it with the recorder. The remaining mapping stayed sealed.
The Guide candidate's chirality matched eleven of twelve concealed physical directions and five of twelve matched decoy writes. Its five-band order survived every appearance. Maximum visible recursion had fallen from two divisions to one across cumulative active cycles, not across time spent in HOLD.
The Quitter candidate retained the clockwise open knot and acknowledgment gap across four changes in phase class. No private scene, gesture, voice, or face recurred. Its depth fell from two to one.
The Sovereign candidate appeared only after live accepted cycles with fresh consequence. Matched decoy writes and HOLD intervals produced no closure. Its five-to-one relation remained stable while every visible human carrier of that relation failed to return.
Evan opened a provisional catalog.

The utility door opened. Ruth stopped on the kitchen side of the yellow line.
"Is it finished?"
"It is holding."
"That is not one of the choices I offered."
Evan turned the monitor so she could see the large status at the top without entering the room. HOLD / ALL LIMITS ARMED appeared above RMC-01.
Ruth ignored the status and read the table. She moved one finger along the Quitter row without touching the screen.
"Who is this?"
"A candidate residual from versions who stopped the earlier machine. I cannot recover their biographies now."
"Then write that you cannot recover them."
"That is what the column says."
"The column says their biography was not recovered, as if your recovery were the biography."
"I marked erasure not established."
"That is better." Ruth read the line again. "What you can still measure is not what remains."
He started to explain that no instrument, including memory, could justify a claim about an inaccessible state.
"You couldn't recover Celia," Ruth said. "You made that my mistake."
"The evidence is not the same."
"I did not say it was the same. I said you make the same kind of sentence."
Ruth returned to the kitchen. She had not validated the figure, interpreted the apparatus, or supplied a privileged memory. She had corrected the grammar of Evan's uncertainty.
He changed the column heading from body / biography recovered to body / biographical feature observed in this protocol. He did not enter her sentence into D-01.
The remaining sealed schedule contained six recovery-aligned physical intervals, six projection-aligned intervals, and matched inert controls. Evan could open the contactor with three candidate modes and a local rank result that appeared to support his objective.
He left the contactor armed.
The fixed HOLD interval expired. The isolated sequencer released the next committed block, and D-01 resumed without an input from the report recorder, the table, or Ruth.
During the first interval, the Guide's five bands returned at depth one. During the second, the open knot replaced them. The next inert write produced no directional response. Known structures exchanged the foreground without regaining detail.
At the edge of the fourth interval, a thin relation opened behind them.
It was not vertical or broad. It did not close. Three linked surfaces divided around an empty center, and each surface divided again without reproducing the same shape. Evan counted three complete structural levels before the report tone.
"UNKNOWN. OPEN. DEPTH THREE. NO PRIVATE MARKER OBSERVED."
The relation did not react to his voice. It had no hand, room, scar, family scene, title, or relief response. Its internal turns used neither the Guide's braid, the Quitter's gap, nor the Sovereign's closure.
After the next physical change, it reached four levels.
The following matched decoy produced no change. A projection-aligned step flattened the outer surface but did not remove the three levels beneath it. On the next recovery-aligned interval, a fifth distinct division opened.
Evan reported only structure. The unknown relation supplied no advice and made no request.
At the second pause, the isolated mapping confirmed that every positive depth change had followed a recovery-aligned physical step. None had followed a matched decoy. The sample was too small to identify a family and too directional to merge with the known residuals.
Evan added one row.
