No Common Clock
U-01 opened a seventh level and acquired a center.
The center was not a closure like the Sovereign's. Nothing entered it or emerged as one output. The surrounding relations preserved their separate boundaries while orienting around an absence. Evan experienced the arrangement as attention before he had evidence that it attended to anything.
"UNKNOWN. DEPTH SEVEN. CENTER OPEN."
D-01's last diagnostic block remained sealed. The report recorder remained isolated. The rotor held base speed, the heat front advanced through its committed interval, and the local five-channel rank stayed above four.
In a room Evan could not locate, Mara Ibarra heard June Park say her name.
Mara had answered the same orientation questions before the session began. Her name, the day, the building, the study, the person waiting to drive her home. She had passed medical and psychological screening, reviewed the consent form with staff, and asked two questions the form did not answer. The first concerned payment if she ended the session early. The second concerned whether the room's abstract print could be removed because it looked determined to become significant.
The consent coordinator had confirmed that stopping would not reduce Mara's compensation. June had removed the print.
Mara held a soft pneumatic bulb in her right hand. One short squeeze meant that she could hear the facilitator and wished to continue. Two squeezes meant that she wanted assistance or the session stopped. They had practiced both signals before a licensed clinician administered the study drug according to the approved protocol.
The cuff, pulse sensor, and cardiac leads reported expected changes. A study nurse watched them. June sat near Mara's left shoulder and spoke rarely. Nothing about the room required a cosmology.
Mara had volunteered because the compensation covered two weeks of groceries and because she was curious about a perception her ordinary mind could not produce. She had no superconducting equipment, no motor-control experience, and no connection to Evan Hale.
The dark behind her closed eyes divided into surfaces.
They did not seem infinite. Each completed relation opened another one until counting became slower than appearance. Around them lay a cold annular structure with a pale break along one edge. Five bands passed through the ring without touching it.
In the garage, the isolated sequencer advanced the stator chirality clockwise.
U-01's outer relations turned. Five of them acquired a common winding while the center remained open.
"CLOCKWISE. FIVE BANDS. DEPTH SEVEN."
Mara saw the five bands turn clockwise around the broken ring.
A figure resolved inside them. It had too many edges to be a body and too consistent an orientation to remain architecture. A moving boundary of warmth crossed one side while the other remained dark. The figure appeared inseparable from both the ring and the advancing boundary.
Mara did not hear speech. Her mind constructed an agent-shaped conviction that the figure was responsible for the machine and afraid of what it was doing.
June said, "Mara, if you can hear me and want to continue, squeeze once."
Mara squeezed once.
U-01's five outer surfaces closed around its center and opened again.
The motion did not resemble the Sovereign's many-to-one collapse. Every band recovered its boundary after the closure. It resembled acknowledgment.
"TRANSIENT CLOSURE. FIVE RESTORED."
Evan kept his hands still until the report committed. Then he moved two fingers through the small clockwise circle he used while tracing a callback.
The gesture had identified the Quitter when a different childhood room and shutdown sequence still surrounded it. U-01 contained none of those markers. Evan offered the gesture anyway because compression could have removed the evidence he wanted the gesture to recover.
"Are you me?" he asked.
The report recorder captured the question. D-01 did not.
The open center turned toward him. Two narrow branches described a clockwise circle and stopped with a gap between their ends.
Mara saw the geometric figure lift two joined extensions and make a small clockwise movement.
The motion carried no name. Mara's mind supplied person, machine, repeated operation, and an urgent wish to be recognized as someone separate from the machine. She could not tell whether the figure wanted rescue, permission, or a witness.
Evan's familiarity response arrived after the movement, not before it. The gesture was his. The gap resembled the Quitter. The five bands resembled the Guide. The ring and heat front resembled D-01. A residual family could contain all four if it had lost enough biographical resolution.
He did not consider that another observer might be constructing him from the same inadequate relations.
The concealed sequencer reversed the physical phase.
U-01 reversed its winding within one report interval.
In Mara's room, the five bands changed handedness. The figure stayed attached to the broken ring, but the moving heat boundary crossed it from the other side. Mara's hand tightened around the bulb and did not release immediately.
June reminded her where she was. The nurse read the monitor values aloud. They remained within the expected transient range. June said that one short squeeze still meant continue and two meant stop.
Mara released the bulb without giving a second squeeze.
D-01 reached the end of its committed physical interval. The stator returned to base drive. The eddy brake absorbed the commanded increment. The heat front passed the final sensor and the sequencer entered HOLD.
U-01 flattened from seven visible levels to three, then to one. Its open center closed without producing an output. The last remaining relation was a damaged ring with a pale edge.
Then it disappeared.
The ring in Mara's field receded at the same place in her local order. The figure lost its extensions, then its center. June's voice became a voice in a room instead of a geometric pressure. The cuff tightened around Mara's arm and annoyed her.
Neither room had received the other's clock.
Evan's regulator counted mechanical seconds against an optical gate. The clinic used its own medical clock. Each record ordered events locally. No light pulse, cable, prior synchronization, or shared coordinate defined an offset between them. Agreement in sequence could not be converted into latency, direction, or signal speed.

Evan's record contained his machine and U-01. The clinic record contained Mara's body, responses, and room. Neither contained the other. Their sequence labels did not establish simultaneity, and only Mara's later report could order the unobserved percept. No lawful experiment placed the two sources on one timeline.
No proper name, date, equation, location, or theory crossed the encounter. Evan received no proof that U-01 was a person. Mara received no technical instruction and no reason to believe the machine existed outside a drug-induced percept. The corresponding structure established no independently attributable message.
Evan unsealed the last diagnostic mapping. U-01's phase responses followed every physical step and none of the matched decoys. That preserved the correlation from RMC-01. The apparent acknowledgment and copied gesture remained unblinded exploratory observations.
He added CONTACT-LIKE to the candidate record, then removed it. The word implied two parties and a direction between them. He replaced it with RECIPROCAL AGENT RENDERING / POSSIBLE.
The change did not prevent him from filing U-01 under Evan-derived residual families. He had recognized his gesture, his machine, and his problem. The fact that all three had been supplied from his side of the encounter did not feel like disconfirming evidence.
The sealed diagnostic sweep was complete. D-01 remained armed in HOLD, its next controller step waiting on the first live contingency outside the protocol.
In the clinic, Mara opened her eyes. June asked her to state her name and where she was. Mara answered both. The study nurse removed the blood-pressure cuff after its final reading.
"What do you remember?" June asked.
Mara described the cold broken ring, five bands turning clockwise, and a figure inseparable from a machine. She described the figure's small circular movement, the reversal, the warmth crossing from the other side, and the room returning. June wrote down the order without suggesting one.
