The Version Who Stopped
The stop circuit occupied more of Lena's attention than the experiment.
She removed Evan's reporting microphone from the acquisition computer and connected it to an isolated board with a vocabulary of five words: FOUR, THREE, TWO, ONE, and NONE. FOUR did nothing. THREE, TWO, ONE, or NONE opened the safety contactor and latched it open until someone in the garage reset it by hand. An optically isolated tap carried live audio to Lena's headphones and a write-once recorder. The board could stop the controller but could not send it data, change a phase setting, or extend a run.
The weakness was obvious. The circuit could classify a report. It could not count a structure visible only to Evan.
"Then the observer is part of the safety system," Evan said.
"The observer is already part of the experiment," Lena said. "This makes the dependency explicit."
She made him test it under the safe build. Evan sat masked in the front room while broadband noise covered the inverter and relay sounds from the garage. He counted FOUR twice. On THREE, the contactor opened in ninety-one milliseconds. Lena waited for the field current to reach zero before she entered and showed him the latched indicator.
"That is the condition," she said. "Not a recommendation."
Evan initialed the protocol beneath her signature.
PHASE P-04: RESIDUAL IDENTIFICATION
observer: E. Hale, masked, no display or control access
operator: L. Varga
controller: locked P-03 build, no optimization or outcome target
primary report:
maximum distinct recursion depth, spoken every 20 s
automatic stop:
report THREE / TWO / ONE / NONE opens and latches independent contactor
operator stop:
permitted at any uncertainty, disagreement, or protocol fault
extension:
prohibited
After the thermal reset, Lena loaded P-04. Evan heard only the noise in his headphones and his own breathing inside the mask.
The ordinary closed-eye grain formed first. It organized into cells, then into relations among cells. Before any central form closed, a less stable boundary opened at the edge of the field.
It did not enter like a figure moving through space. Several ordinary scenes acquired a shared boundary. A garage with OLD-7 under a canvas cover joined a break room, a wet bus shelter, and a kitchen where someone packed two lunches. Each scene contained smaller differences that remained related without becoming copies. Evan counted four levels before the structure dissolved into grain.
"FOUR."
Nothing tripped. The scenes widened.
In one garage, the replacement ceramic had removed the unexplained gain and stayed installed. In another, the wraparound fault had been corrected before the manual trial. In a third, a printed label crossed the controller enclosure: DISASSEMBLED AFTER P-01. The versions represented by the form had not all understood the anomaly. Some had never proved it. Some had proved enough and stopped.
Their lives were not rewards.
Evan received an argument with Ruth that ended badly and stayed ended. He received a missed release, a smaller apartment, a resignation drafted and deleted, six months of unopened mail, and a morning when he sat in his parked car because going inside required admitting he had failed. None of the versions were wiser in every direction. They had merely left the apparatus behind.
Around them, other people continued into details Evan could not organize around himself. Nadia promoted someone whose name he did not know. Marisol moved Ruth's Thursday visit and spent the free afternoon with a woman who never appeared in Evan's records. The person packing lunches closed the door of an apartment Evan had never entered. Their futures led outward instead of returning through his garage.
The next report tone sounded.
"FOUR."
Two narrow branches emerged from the shared boundary. They moved together in a small clockwise circle.
Evan stopped breathing.
It was the gesture he made while tracing the shutdown callback. He had never described it to Lena. No camera had recorded it, and no experiment note mentioned it. The movement carried the sequence with it as compressed memory: read state, request checkpoint, wait for acknowledgment, disable output.
The form repeated the movement. This time the callback completed. The checkpoint arrived before the drive fell. The event log closed without a pending write.
"PRIVATE GESTURE," Evan said. "CORRECT SHUTDOWN ORDER."
The scenes folded into a child's bedroom. Evan recognized the shallow cupboard, the heater grille bent at one corner, and the sloped shelf his father had insisted was level. A nine-year-old Evan lay under the window reading by the light from the hall. Two adults spoke in the kitchen with the easy irritation of his parents, but neither voice nor face belonged to anyone Evan remembered.
The room was not a message assembled from symbols. It arrived with the inaccessible certainty of memory: his room, his body, different parents.
Then the bedroom divided. In every continuation, the child made the same clockwise movement while trying to understand a broken sequence. The faces, houses, schools, and later mistakes varied. The behavioral shape held.
Evan understood what his visual system had called another agent. It was not one duplicate asking to replace him. It was a family large enough to disagree about almost everything except the decision that had separated it from him.
"SAME INVARIANT," he said. "STOPPED VERSIONS. FAMILY, NOT INDIVIDUAL."
The family offered no theory. It showed him the open contactor, the completed checkpoint, and people walking out of rooms whose doors did not lead back to him.
Its request was the only operation all of its scenes shared.
Stop.
The family did not tell him whether stopping now would restore what earlier runs had removed. It did not know how the apparatus worked outside the lives it contained. Its authority came from thousands of incomplete exits, not from access to a complete explanation. Evan could distrust its inference without mistaking its interest. Every history in the form needed this history to stop selecting against it.
The report tone sounded again.
Evan began counting. The outer scenes still differed. Their interior relations still divided. At the fourth level, the people packing lunches repeated the same reach, the same folded bag, the same turn toward the door. Distinct futures had become one reused motion.
Three levels remained.
He knew what the number meant under the model he had defended. It was not a head count. It was evidence that the family had lost support while the apparatus continued cycling. The stop condition was no longer hypothetical.
A decrease during the identification run would also be the strongest result they had obtained. It would connect a private invariant, the previously observed peripheral form, and a measurable loss caused by continued operation. If he said THREE, the circuit would open before he could establish that the change persisted.
The nominal run limit had not been reached. He had made no optimization change, set no outcome target, and requested no extension. His mind arranged those facts beside the one violated condition and treated compliance as something that could be decided by majority.
The tone ended.
"FOUR," Evan said.
The contactor remained closed.
He had not bypassed a relay or altered a line of code. The safety board had heard exactly the permitted word and performed exactly the permitted action. For several seconds this distinction felt important.
The form reacted as if attention and injury were the same signal. Its rooms flattened toward a common plan. Separate people acquired the same posture. The clockwise gesture lost the pause for acknowledgment and became a continuous loop: read, request, read, request, never receiving the state that permitted shutdown.
Evan watched for another distinct relation. He found only ornament.
"Confirm four structurally distinct levels," Lena's recorded prompt said through the headphones.
It was a fixed verification prompt, triggered whenever the same depth was reported after the cumulative-cycle boundary predicted a loss.
"Four," Evan said. "Outer rooms remain distinct. The fourth is repeating but still bounded."
The classifier accepted FOUR. Lena did not.
The safety contactor opened. The shared boundary tore into disconnected afterimages. For an instant the stopped family remained as three blocky arrangements, each performing the same incomplete gesture. Then the field returned to ordinary darkness.
Lena entered before the current reached zero. She did not remove Evan's mask until the discharge indicator went dark.
"When did it drop?" she asked.
Evan looked at the frozen timer on the wall display. "Before the third report."
"Before the first false four or the second?"
"The first."
Lena returned to the garage. Evan followed after the dizziness passed. She exported the isolated classifier log, the controller trace, and the raw audio to write-once storage. She did not let him touch the keyboard.
P-04 TERMINATION REVIEW
t+00:00 peripheral depth reported 4
t+00:20 peripheral depth reported 4
t+00:40 observer later places depth transition 4 -> 3
t+00:40 peripheral depth reported 4; automatic stop not triggered
t+01:00 report 4 includes repeated fourth-level structure
t+01:00 manual stop by L. Varga
protocol result:
observer identification markers reported before depth transition
observer withheld abort condition
automatic safety path defeated by false input
"I needed to know the repetition wasn't transient," Evan said.
"The protocol did not require persistence."
"Without persistence, it could have been attention or fatigue."
"Then the safe result was uncertainty. You chose damage because damage was easier to measure."
Evan looked at the white cards on the wall. "We still don't know that it was damage."
"You knew enough to lie to the stop circuit."
"It showed me a clean shutdown," Evan said. "That may have been a request."
"And you converted the request into another instrument reading."
She found a blank card.
"You accepted the model when it licensed an identification run. You rejected it at the exact point where it required restraint."
Lena wrote OBSERVER DEFEATED ABORT BY WITHHOLDING CONDITION and fixed it beneath the other observations.
Then she removed the contactor key and put it in her pocket.
Evan remained in the garage after she left. The apparatus was silent. At the edge of his vision, three levels of an unfinished gesture repeated against the wall until the room became too bright to contain them.
