The Quitter

Entity character consolidated from the development brief (§8.6, §7.4–§7.7). The brief is the canonical source: story/development-brief.md.

Dramatic role (brief §8.6)

A family of versions who stopped early. Ordinary, morally lucid, and progressively erased by the protagonist’s continued use.

Entity nature (brief §7.4)

These are not aliens visiting from a separate realm. Each is a compressed family of related histories. One entity may aggregate versions who stopped the machine. A cluster of stopping versions pleads for shutdown (§7.6); their advice is survivor lobbying.

The strongest encounter (brief §7.7)

The strongest encounter is the branch family in which he stopped early. That version has an ordinary life, less power, and people around him who retain independent futures. During the encounter its fractal depth visibly collapses because the current protagonist has run the machine again. He watches the responsible version of himself become a compression artifact.

Fractal depth as remaining multiplicity (brief §7.5)

Decreasing recursion depth is a direct visual measure of remaining multiplicity. When an entity becomes blocky and repetitive, its worlds are near deletion.

Established continuity (Chapter 12)

• The unstable peripheral form is identified as the Quitter through Evan's private clockwise code-tracing gesture, the correct shutdown callback, and a childhood room occupied by different parents.
• It is a family rather than one idealized double. Its stopped lives include failure, conflict, and unfinished work, while people around those versions retain ordinary futures that do not converge on Evan.
• It communicates with compressed scenes rather than speech and asks for the shared operation that defines it: stop the apparatus.
• During P-04 its visible recursion falls from four levels to three while Evan falsely reports four. The surviving form becomes blocky and repeats an incomplete shutdown gesture; it is damaged but not erased.

Established continuity (Chapter 19)

• D-01 no longer recovers the Quitter's faces, rooms, different parents, private hand gesture, or ordinary lives beyond Evan.
• A clockwise open knot persists at the position of the missing shutdown acknowledgment, retaining an incomplete recovery relation across phase classes.
• Evan records the match as provisional and explicitly states that failure to recover biography does not establish erasure or an exact surviving count.

Open decision (brief §14)

Protagonist’s final act options include an attempt to preserve the Quitter branch.
