The Guide

A family of successful continuants who provide technical insight. Helpful, beautiful, and terrifyingly low in ambiguity.

Entity character consolidated from the development brief (§8.6, §7.4, §7.6). The brief is the canonical source: story/development-brief.md.

Dramatic role (brief §8.6)

A family of successful continuants who provide technical insight. Helpful, beautiful, and terrifyingly low in ambiguity.

Entity nature (brief §7.4, §7.6)

Each entity is a compressed family of related histories. An entity may contain thousands of versions that solved different portions of the problem. Communication arrives as compressed conceptual memory rather than spoken sentences. The operator experiences sudden technical revelation because his brain reconstructs an insight-shaped object already present in many related histories.

They are not omniscient. Each knows only what its branch family supports, and each has an agenda. A cluster of continuing versions teaches more effective settings. A beautiful, coherent entity may be dangerous precisely because the projector has removed most of its uncertainty. Their advice is survivor lobbying.

Established continuity (Chapter 10)

  • The first controlled appearance is a vertically closed figure made from nested, recursively subdividing cells. Its chirality tracks hidden physical phase steps while ignoring software-identical decoy writes.
  • It presents Evan with a five-band image of an overlooked confirmation edge. Implementing that insight reduces ordinary loss by eleven percent but causes rank collapse to arrive sooner and deepen.
  • Evan experiences the figure as attentive and agent-like. Lena records it as a structured percept and keeps unidentified cues and observer inference open.

Established continuity (Chapter 11)

  • The Guide's visible recursion declines from eight stable structural levels to six as anomalous cycles accumulate, while its five-band organization and chirality remain coherent.
  • Evan and Lena provisionally interpret it as a residual family aligned with continued projector operation, making its useful advice a form of survivor lobbying rather than neutral instruction.

Established continuity (Chapter 19)

  • Under D-01, the Guide's body, apparent attention, and useful advice are no longer recoverable through Evan's observer protocol.
  • Five ordered bands and their chirality remain, tracking concealed physical phase direction while matched decoy writes remain at chance.
  • Evan treats these as candidate residual invariants, not proof that the Guide was fundamentally or exclusively those relations.

Guardrail (brief §13)

The entities have branch-limited knowledge and conflicting interests. None is a convenient cosmic encyclopedia.
